Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication technology that allows devices such as mobile phones, computers, and peripherals to transmit data or voice wirelessly over a short distance. The purpose of Bluetooth is to replace the cables that normally connect devices, while still keeping the communications between them secure.

Suppose your friend has a picture on his mobile. You want to bring the picture to your mobile without using internet. In this case, if both of them have Bluetooth in their mobile, then the picture can be brought using Bluetooth. You may also have noticed the widespread use of cordless mice and keyboards with laptops or tabloid computers. Codless headphones or speakers are also very popular among you now. All of these connect multiple devices using wireless connections. The popular wireless technology is known as Bluetooth. It was invented in 1994 by telecom vendor company Ericsson. Bluetooth is named after King Harold Bluetooth of Denmark.

Bluetooth is the most popular wireless technology for free data transfer over short distances (close to 10 meters). Bluetooth is a wireless personal area network (WPAN) protocol, since almost all modern short-distance devices can exchange data privately at no cost. It is technically known as IEEE 802.15. Traditional desktop computers, which do not have Bluetooth technology built-in, can also enjoy the benefit of Bluetooth connection by connecting an additional USB Bluetooth adapter to that desktop computer. Bluetooth technology is now being used in many devices, from mobile phones to laptops, tabs, PDAs, medical devices and home entertainment devices. The network that is created through Bluetooth technology is called Piconet. When two adjacent piconets are connected by a common slave node, these two piconets together are called scaternet.

Bluetooth is considered a popular way to connect and exchange information with mobile phones, laptops, computers, printers, digital cameras and video game consoles.

Use of Bluetooth

1. Bluetooth is used to transfer sound or voice data by connecting a hands-free headset to the phone.

2. This technology is used to transfer files from phone to computer.

3. Other devices can be connected to the computer and information can be exchanged.

4. Bluetooth is used for wireless communication with PC input and output devices.

5. Used in GPS receivers, medical devices, barcode scanners and traffic control devices.

6. Dedicated telehealth devices use Bluetooth for short-range transmission of health sensor data.

7. Bluetooth is often used for control in areas where infrared is used.

Bluetooth features

1. Bluetooth is used to transfer data between two nearby devices.

2. Transmits signals at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. Its bandwidth is 1Mbps.

3. Can communicate with wireless devices within 10-100 meters and does not interfere with walls or any other barrier data transmission.

4. Bluetooth is a master - a packet with slave structure - based protocol.

5. Bluetooth is used to connect mobile phones, laptops, computers, printers, digital cameras and video game consoles and to exchange information.

6. A piconet has a total of 255 slave nodes, but maintains contact with eight slaves and the remaining nodes remain inactive.

7. Bluetooth can be configured automatically.

The disadvantage of Bluetooth

1. It is not possible to communicate over a distance of more than 100 meters.

2. Data transfer rate is relatively low.

3. If the Bluetooth option of the mobile phone is turned on, the battery charge will be reduced.

4. Bluetooth internet speed is much lower.

5. Bluetooth - Data transfer security is low.
